How to make a scenic eclipse card

Today at my live Craftalong, we made an eclipse card using the gorgeous Scenic Coast Designer Series Paper (DSP) and the Sunset Coast bundle. There are many styles of eclipse card, some using images and some using letters. This one uses strips of DSP, with the alternate strips raised to create the effect. 

I also shared my secret tip that helps stabilise the raised DSP strips – read on to find out!

The Scenic Coast DSP lends itself to this type of eclipse card. There are six different scenes, with eight sheets of each scene in the pack of 6″x6″ DSP, all with beautiful iridescent elements. The reverse of this DSP has single colour patterns, perfect for backgrounds for cards.

To make this card you will need:

• Colour cardstock base: 10.5cm x 29.6cm scored at 14.8cm (11” x 4¼” scored at 5½”)
• Two sheets of Scenic Coast (or other scenic pattern) DSP
• Coordinating colour panel (x 2): 14.8cm x 8.5cm (5½” x 3¼”)
• Basic White inside panel: 13.8cm x 9.5cm (5″ x 3¾”)
• Scraps of Basic White and coordinating colour cardstock for sentiment
• Foam adhesive strips
• Coordinating ink pad

Instructions

Fold and burnish the card base.

Cut the DSP both sheets at the same time to 14.8cm x 8cm (5½” x 3″), centring the image as you wish. It is important to cut them together so that the pieces are identical.

Adhere both sheets to the coordinating colour panels. (Adhering the piece that will form the strips to a second piece of cardstock gives it more strength so that it sits better on the card – this is my secret tip!)

Stick one panel to the card front just above the centre to allow for a sentiment below.

Cut the second panel into nine strips. First turn the panel over. FOR UK: Measure and mark at 1.8cm from one end, then seven sets of 1.6cm and the remaining piece should measure 1.8cm. Number each segment from 1 to 9 as shown. (In this example, I made ten panels, but an odd number is far better….)

(FOR US: mark then cut at every ½” to give eleven panels)

Cut the panel at these marks, ie. the first cut is 1.8cm then the next seven cuts are 1.5cm each. leaving a 1.8cm piece at the end. Be careful to lay them on your worksurface in order!

Separate the strips alternatively (Note – the spare strips can be used to make a second card if you have another sheet of the DSP to hand.)

Add foam adhesive strips (or plenty of dimensionals) to the set of strips you want to use.

Stick these strips on top of your eclipse card, matching the patterns carefully.

Stamp your sentiment onto a scrap of Basic White using coordinating ink.

Layer this onto a scrap of coordinating colour cardstock. I flagged the ends of my strip.

Add to your card in the bottom right-hand corner using dimensionals.

Stamp a greeting on the Basic White inside panel and add any decoration you wish using the Sunset Coast stamps.

Adhere the completed panel inside your card

Don’t forget to decorate your envelope! I used some of the remaining bits of DSP to add a panel down the outside and also on the back flap.
