In my Craft with Carol live this week I made a custom box for eight notecards and envelopes I made last week using the Softly Sophisticated bundle, free with a £90 order for just two more days.
I demonstrated how to measure the item you want to make a box for and how to work out the size of cardstock or DSP you need to make a box case and a lid. Full details are given below and can also be found in the video replay here:
Here’s how to work your measurements out:
First, the box base. Measure the item’s width and length. The notelets and envelopes measured 9.5cm x 12cm (or 4 3/4″ x 3 3/4′). Then measure the depth of the item – my notelets and envelopes measured 2.5cm (1″) deep.
Add twice the depth to each width and length measurement to allow for the sides of the box. So the total measurements for my box base, that is, the size of the piece of cardstock I needed, was 14.5cm x 17cm (or 6 3/4″ x 5 3/4″).
The lid can either be made the same size or the sides can be reduced a little, which I think makes the box look better. I decided the depth of my lid was going to be 1.5cm, therefore the size of DSP I needed for the lid was the width and length plus twice the depth, that is, 12.5cm x 15cm.
To make up the base, the cardstock needs to be scored at 2.5cm (or 1″) (the depth) on all four sides. The lid similarly needed to be scored at 1.5cm (or 5/8″) on all four sides.
In summary:
Box base = (width + 2x depth) x (length + 2x depth)
The lid size is similarly calculated using your required depth for the lid (usually less than the base).
I hope this helps you make custom boxes to fit all your gift items.
Thank you for taking the time to read my post.
