In today’s LIVE Craft with Carol, I made a torn aperture card using the Fruit Salad Designer Series Paper. This DSP is FREE with a £55 order this month and has gorgeous fruit images and patterns. Torn aperture cards are simple to make and can be made in many different ways. I showed three ways today: a horizontal tear, an angled tear and a tear and roll. They also involved some fussy cutting, but feel free to use any coloured stamped and die-cut image instead!

All three torn aperture cards use a Basic White card base 10.5cm x 29.6cm scored at 14.8cm (11” x 4¼” scored at 5½”). Using the cardstock lengthwise means the cards stand up better for display, but you can use the base widthwise if you wish.

Choose a well pattened DSP so it stands out against your Basic White card. This needs to be cut at 10cm x 14.3cm (4” x 5¼”).

You also need a Basic White piece to form the torn aperture. For the horizontal and angled tear cards, this piece should be 6cm x 14.3cm (2¼” x 5¼”). For the tear and roll card, the Basic White piece should be 10cm x 14.3cm (4” x 5¼”).

Don’t forget to decorate your envelopes! You can either use the DSP to cover the flap or cut out more fruit pieces to stick on.

Card 1: Horizontal tear

Fold and burnish the card base. Adhere the DSP centrally to the front of your card.

Hold the Basic White piece around halfway along the short edge and tear across the piece to the other side – see the video below if you are not sure.

Stick one piece at the top of the DSP and the second piece at the bottom leaving the aperture for the DSP to show through. If you prefer, turn the second side round – it depends on how it has torn which is best!

Fussy cut some fruit or stamp and die-cut an image of your choosing to decorate the card.

Add a sentiment stamped in Memento ink wherever it looks best and add some gems or ribbon to finish the card.

Card 2: Angled tear

Fold and burnish the card base. Adhere the DSP centrally to the front of your card.

Hold the Basic White piece towards one corner along the short edge and tear diagonally across the piece to the bottom of the other short side – see the video below if you are not sure.

Stick to your DSP layer with the long edges at the top and bottom. Use more fussy cut fruit to decorate. Stamp your sentiment either directly onto the bottom right of the card or onto a scrap of Basic White and cut out before adding with dimensionals.

Add some gems or ribbon to finish the card.

Card 3: Tear and roll card

Fold and burnish the card base. Adhere the DSP centrally to the front of your card.

This time do not tear completely across your Basic White piece. Hold the piece at one short edge around a third of the way across and tear straight down for approximately two-thirds of the length. Hold the first top edge again and repeat a tear starting around half way across the remaining area. Make a parallel tear finishing at the same point lengthwise.

Use your bone folder to soften the torn central strip – see the video if you are unsure. Fold the edge over a tiny way then roll up the strip until you reach the extent of the tear. Use some glue to fix the rolled section to the main piece.

Adhere to the card front lining up to the edges of the DSP.

Use more fussy cut fruit to decorate.

Stamp your sentiment either directly onto the card or onto a scrap of Basic White and cut out before adding with dimensionals.

Add some gems, ribbon or twine to finish the card.

I added some fussy cut fruit to the inside of the cards as well and decorated my envelopes!
