I had to make a very special card for my best friend as it’s her birthday today (though I won’t say how old she is!). She is a girl of many talents – she is a paper crafter, loves crochet and bobbin lace and is a wonderful quilt maker.
So I decided to make a quilt card for her. (It’s the one in the photo above.) I got the idea from an American demonstrator and adapted it for UK sizes. The card I made for my friend was 5″ x 7″ so I could add a couple more layers, but here I give you the measurements for a normal A6 card.
You will need:
- Base card 21cm x 14.8cm scored at 10.5cm
- Colour panel 10cm square (3 7/8″ square)
- Basic White base 9.5cm square (3 3/4″ square)
- DSP of your choice – 4 squares: 4.5cm square (1 3/4″ square)
- Embossing folder – I used one from the Basic Embossing Folders set
- Stamps to decorate – I used the Crafting with You set
Each square of DSP needs to be cut as shown in this diagram.
I show you how to do this using our paper trimmer in the video below.
I think it is best to use quite strong coordinating but contrasting colours of DSP for a quilt card – what do you think?
These tiny triangles can be laid out in whatever pattern you want and stuck to your Basic White square. It is best to add the glue to the area then stick the pieces on rather than try to glue each piece on its own – see the video for the details of this.
To finish, run your completed piece through your chosen embossing folder – I used the flower pattern folder from the Basic Embossing folders set, available as an online exclusive.
Stick to your colour square to your base card. Add your decorations and sentiment as required. I used the Crafting with You dies to make the sewing machine, scissors and ruler. I added a 1cm strip of DSP as “material” to the sewing machine.
I wasn’t very happy with the first card I made on the video as the colours were perhaps too similar, but I was pleased with the star version.
Here are some more quilt cards we made this week at my Craftalong showing different layouts. They are such fun to make! The birthday card was made using bigger 7cm DSP squares (2 3/4″) on a white base 8.5cm x 13.3cm (3 1/4″ x 5 1/4″). The coloured base was 10cm x 14.3cm.
Look closely at the star cards – one is embossed and the other debossed. We couldn’t decide which we liked best at the Craftalong. Which do you prefer?
I hope you have a go at making one of these cards. You could try different embossing folders and different DSP/colour combinations. The possibilities are endless!
