It’s Valentine’s Day next week. I’ve bought my husband a box of chocolates, but I feel just giving him that is a bit staid and boring.
However, thanks to ideas I saw from two fellow demonstrators (I think they were Jeanie Stark and Jean Dunn), I have been able to jazz up the chocolates and present them instead decorated with heart flowers or set into a DSP heart-shaped sweet box.
Watch this video to see how I made these decorations. Measurements are given below.
Measurements:
HEART FLOWERS:
- DSP square approx 2×2″
- DSP square approx 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 “
- Scraps of green cardstock
- Punches or dies
I used the retired heart punch dies, but in the video, I teach you how to cut your own hearts by folding your chosen DSP in half and cutting half a heart shape along the fold. This produces a symmetrical heart which you can use as a template to cut a matching larger heart using pinking shears if you haven’t got heart punches.
If you have the ounces, simply punch out hearts from your DSP as shown in the video.
Form the stem by scoring a scrap 2-3″ strip of green cardstock at 0.5cm then cutting it at 1cm wide. Fold it in half and stick together to provide some strength to allow the heart flower to stand up. Cut two leaves from the same cardstock with the Country Bouquet punch and stick to the stem as shown.
HEART WITH BOX:
- Strip of DSP approx 1 1/4″ wide x 11-12″
- Matching cardstock piece for box: 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ scored at 5/8″ each side
Make up the heart shape with the paper strip.
Fold in half and crease well, then stick the two ends together as shown.
Make up the box by cutting tabs as usual and glueing the box together. (See video for further information).
Then stick the box to the inside of the heart as shown. Add your sweet.
Add your choice of sentiment and decoration. I used a flower made from three (part) hearts cut with the Country Bouquet heart punch as shown in the video. You could just use a heart if you wanted. The sentiment was stamped in Balmy Blue (to match the DSP) onto a scrap strip of Basic White and stuck behind the flower.
I hope you enjoy making these cute Valentine’s decorations.
Let me know if you decide to make some for the loved one in your life!
