For this week’s Christmas Countdown I’m showing you how to make a small gift bag. As a bonus, it will help you use up all those pieces of 6×6″ DSP you might have lying around!

These bags make beautiful table favours, Christmas tree decorations or small gifts. The final size for the 6×6″ paper gift bag is  2 3/4″ x 2 1/2″ x 1″. They fit a small chocolate bar or a couple of wrapped chocolates, or a piece of jewellery for a special present. The larger bag in the picture is made from 8″ x 12″ paper and the final size is 4″ x 4 1/2″ x 2′.

The bags also fold flat for storage if you want to make a bumper number of them for a special event. I’m only sorry I did not think of making these before Halloween. I’ll try and do better next year!

On your 6×6″ paper, score on one side at 2 1/2″ and 3 1/2″ then turn 90 degrees and score at 1 1/2″ and 4 1/2″. Burnish all score lines then fold the sides as shown in the video. Stick the corners down and voila – there is your bag.

I used a piece of card to close the bag, stuck to the back and folded firmly. This will keep the bag closed, but you can add a closure tab as shown in the video. During the Craftalong I used a ribbon to close the bag as you can see in the picture above. Your choice! Finish the bag by adding your chosen decoration.

You can also make this type of bag with any size square, by adjusting the measurements in proportion. At the Craftalong this week I also showed you how to make bigger bags, in the same way, using 8×12″ DSP and adding ribbon handles. Score on the long side at 1/2″, 1″, 5″, 7″, 11″ and 11/1/2″. Score on the short side at 2″ and 6″.

Make up the bag as before. I added ribbon by punching holes in the second panel down on each side and then folded and stuck down the top flap to cover and hold the ribbon in place. I slightly curved the front decorative panel so that the closure tab fits behind it.

I will put together a more detailed pdf for all these bags at some point – let me know if that would be helpful.
