Last year I focused on making Christmas gift tags using a kit and I showed how the kit could be used to make a range of tags and even cards. Gift tags are useful for many occasions, not just for Christmas. One of my lovely viewers, Angela, wanted some tips about making gift tags, so I used the ideas from last year’s kit as the basis for these ideas which I shared in my Free Craftalong yesterday, including how to make the toppers for the twine! Of which more below…

If you have the now retired Tailor Made Tags dies, making tags is easy. Here are two tags I made using the Tailor Made Tags set, the Fun Patterns embossing folder and the new Wildflower Birthday DSP, which you will find in the January to April mini catalogue (due out on 7th January). See how I made these in the video at the end of the post.

But it is just as easy and quick to make gift tags using other dies you might have or even just shaping pieces of card and adding Designer Series Paper. Here are a few ideas:

GIft Tag 1: Stylish Shapes dies

I used the square dies from the Stylish Shapes die set to make this tag. I cut one Very Vanilla and one DSP square. I stamped the cheese and wine image (from my new favourite One More Year stamp set, also from the new mini catalogue) in Memento then coloured it using my Stampin’ Up! blends. The For You sentiment is from another new set, For the Books. The DSP I used is now retired.

I offset these two die cut squares as shown, stuck them together across one corner then punched a hole in the corner and added some twine.

You could also make tags in a similar way using the circle dies fron this set.

Gift Tag 2: Nested Essentials die set

For these tags I used two sizes of the rounded rectangles and two sizes of the pennant dies. The smaller shapes were cut from Basic White or Very Vanilla and the larger shapes from the new Wildflower Birthday DSP or from some retired DSP.

I added a punched circle holder for the twine. I punched a 1/4″ circle from some gold foil, then punched out a 3/4″ circle around it and stuck it to my tag. (I found it was impossible to get the smaller circle in the centre doing it the other way round!). See the video for details if you are unsure.

The stamping used Pretty Peacock and Crushed Curry inks. The stamps are all from new mini catalogue sets – the cute dog is from One More Year, the for you and heart from For the Books and the thank you and flowers are from Heart Shaped, a double Saleabration item that comes with dies that should definitely go on your wish list!

Gift Tag 3: Something Fancy dies

I made these tags using the Something Fancy dies. There are three different die-sets in this set that have a larger and a smaller version which lend themselves to making tags. The scalloped edge one can be used both ways round as you can see in the picture below, with the scallops either facing up or facing down – or even sideways if you want!

I also used the rounded rectangle ones. I think these are best with the centre smaller piece raised on dimensionals. Again, I have made twine holder toppers out of gold card. You could also use the third set of oval-like dies to make tags, but I ran out of time!
