I love books! As many of you might know, I read at least two books a week, usually one “real” book and one on my Kindle – because there is so little to watch on TV!

I was asked to make my version of a magnetic bookmark card after showing a magnetic bookmark swap from On Stage recently. I had great fun putting this project together. I wanted the card to stand alone and the bookmark to separate from it and be a useful gift for all the bookworms in your life.

The magnetic bookmark will wrap over a book’s page. It has some pieces of magnetic mat holding the two sides together, a simple closure that will not damage book pages but will hold the bookmark firmly in place. The top ribbon adds some interest and provides a useful marker for the user. The card can then be displayed separately.

I used the Birds Eye View and For the Books stamp sets for this project together with Gingham Gala DSP (now retired). Both these stamp sets are currently on the Last Chance Products list, so be quick if you want them!

Choose your coloured cardstock to coordinate with the DSP you decide to use.

To make this project you need:

  • Coloured Card base 21cm x 14.8cm scored at 10.5cm (8½” x 5½” scored at 4¼”)
  • DSP for front of card 10cm x 14.3cm (4” x 5¼”)
  • Basic White for card front 5cm x 12cm (2″ x 4½”)
  • Basic White panel for inside approx 8cm x 12.5cm (3″ x 5″)
  • Coloured card for bookmark 5.5cm x 28cm scored at 14.5cm (2¼” x 11″ scored at 5½”)
  • DSP for bookmark 5cm x 14cm (2″ x 5¼”)
  • Basic White scraps for stamping
  • Small length of coordinating ribbon

Fold and burnish your bookmark card base. Adhere the DSP to the front.

On the Basic White strip for the card front, stamp the bird in Memento ink then stamp a pile of books beneath its feet.

Colour using Blends. (I used Bamy Blue for the bird and Granny Apple Green, Lemon Lolly and Daffodil Delight for the books.)

Stamp “For you” in a coordinating ink (I used Granny Apple Green). Add the tiny pair of glasses in Memento.

Adhere this completed panel to the centre front of your bookmark card as shown in the picture above.

Stamp the books in the corner of the inside panel and colour using Blends. Stick inside your card.

Fold and burnish your bookmark. Adhere the DSP to the front.

Round all four bottom corners (you can round the DSP bottom corners before adhering it if you wish but I didn’t bother).

Stamp the bird and pile of books on the scrap of Basic White in Memento ink. I added spectacles to the bird – optional!

Colour using blends then fussy cut out. Add to the bookmark using multipurpose glue – the bookmark needs to be flat to be useful, so using dimensionals would be unwise….

Stamp the sentiment in the coordinating ink on another scrap of Basic White and trim to fit across the bookmark as shown in the picture above.

Stamp books and hearts on the reverse of the bookmark in coordinating ink as shown above or add your own pattern ideas.

Cut two small pieces of magnetic mat. Let them stick together. Add Stampin Seal to one side and stick to the bookmark. Repeat for the other side to stick that magnetic piece to the other side of the bookmark. (See the video for this if you are unsure.)

Punch a small hole at the top of the folded bookmark and add a short length of ribbon. Keep the hole near the top of the bookmark so you do not add too much bulk. This will still allow the completed magnetic bookmark card to fit in a normal envelope.

Finish your magnetic bookmark card by sliding the completed bookmark over the front of the bookmark card so it lies over the white panel and gift to a bookworm friend or family member.

Don’t forget to decorate your envelope – I used the book pile again.
