I’m giving you ideas for small gifts and gift boxes in the final few videos in my Christmas Countdown. This is the box I made as a gift for my Christmas class attendees.

I wasn’t sure how best to use the Snowflake tag topper punch but I love this idea from Heidi Smith. The box holds six small tea lights, or you could fill it with sweets or another small gift.

The box is made from one 6″ x 6″ sheet of DSP plus small pieces of coloured cardstock and/or Basic White cardstock. See how to make it in the video below. Measurements and instructions are given below.

You will need:

  • One sheet of 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper
  • Coordinating coloured cardstock 11cm x 4cm
  • Small scrap of Basic White (or other colour) 3.5cm x 4cm
  • Approximately 30-35cm of ribbon

Trim the DSP to 14.6cm on one side. Score on this short edge at 2.8cm, 6.8cm, 9.6cm and 13.6cm. On the long side, score at 2.8cm and 14.3 cm.

Cut each score line on the narrow end strip down to the first score line. Remove the tiny end tab. (See picture below).

Cut each score line on the larger bottom strip to the next score line, matching the two smaller tabs as shown in the picture below. Remove the narrow end tab.

Tea light box cutting

Score the long piece of cardstock at 1cm and at 3.8cm. Place the non-scored end into the snowflake tag topper and punch (see picture above).

Fold to the inside of the box and stick down the two larger thin tabs and the middle thin smaller tab. Leave the end one for now. Add glue or tape to the side long tab and fold the box together. Stick down the remaining thin tab to cover the join.

From the bottom of the box by glueing the tabs, starting with the back large tab, then the two side tabs, and finishing with the front large tab. Make sure the box is rectangular with the sides of the larger tabs parallel.

Notch the small flat on the topper and stick this inside the top of the box. When folded round the box it should sit snugly.

Lay the ribbon lengthwise around the box.

Decorate the small topper piece of Basic White. I used the small snowflake stamp stamped off in Lost Lagoon randomly over the small topper piece of Basic White, then stamped my For You sentiment in Lost Lagoon on top.

Add this to the top of the topper piece, glueing only at the top and bottom to allow the ribbon to run through unimpeded.

Put your tea lights or gifts in the box and tie the ribbon in a pretty bow.

I found this tea light box quite quick to make and a lovely way to use up DSP. You could make this at any time of year by shaping the topper using any other punch you have. I shall be making them for future small gifts in all sorts of DSP and colours!
