Following a comment on my previous “How to make a gift box” video, I thought it might be helpful to show you how to measure any gift and work out what size of card you need to make a gift box.

There are three key measurements to take. NOTE: If your gift is of variable size, you should take the widest/longest/deepest point to measure.

Measure the lengthStep 1: Measure the length, from just outside the stat to just outside the end of the object.

You can measure in inches or centimetres (or both) – just make it the same each time!

Write down your findings.

Measure the width

Step 2: Measure the width of your object from just outside each side.

Again, note down the measurement at the widest point.

Measure depth

Step 3: Measure the depth, again at the widest point from just under the bottom to just over the top.

Round up your measurements a little to make sure you will enclose the gift in your planned box.

Step 4: Calculate the size of cardstock you need

I find this easiest to do by drawing it out as shown in the video. Mark the length and width you measured in the centre of your page. Then add the depth measurement to all four sides.

Add up the totals to give you the size of cardstock you need, then make your box as shown in the previous video.

Please let me know how you get on and let me know whether these instructions are helpful!
